A Look Back – Is Caprica Another BSG?

Back in July of 2008, Caprica was only going to be a backdoor pilot – it may have never reached the series order that it has since. During the Television Critics Association (TCA) Caprica panel some concerns were raised and addressed by selected members from the cast (Polly Walker as Clarice Willow, Eric Stoltz as Daniel Graystone, and Paula Malcomson as Amanda Graystone) Ron Moore and Remi Aubuchon (both writers and executive producers),  and David Eick (executive producer).

One of the questionable matters was whether or not people would be willing to watch Caprica after knowing the events that take place during Battlestar Galactica, the tv show Caprica will be a prequel for. Ron Moore commented that it was this very friction of knowing what will happen that should keep viewers in suspense, setting a mood that everything is determined to fall apart for our characters.

When the panel turned to the idea of mixing scenes from Battlestar Galactica into Caprica Ron Moore said that this would not happen. He commented, “Intercutting the two would feel very oil and water.” He then asserted that Caprica is its own story, describing the city as a technologically advanced society recognizably similar to our own. “I think I was particularly attracted to the idea of doing a science fiction piece that was not built on a foundation of action adventure. It wasn’t about Vipers and it wasn’t about the Cylons attacking every other week. It was really a character piece,” said Moore.

According to David Eick, the focus of technology for Caprica would be artificial intelligence, contrasted against the heavy emphasis on space travel that Battlestar Galactica had. As for bringing characters from Battlestar Galactica into Caprica, Moore commented, “I’d like to hope that we probably won’t do that.”
