Should Caprica Fans Support Blood & Chrome?

Blood & Chrome will take place between Caprica and Battlestar Galactica at the end of the first Cylon War. The name alludes to the first season of FX’s Spartacus: Blood & Sand, a show known for its gory violence. Fans of Caprica’s thoughtful, philosophical content are suspicious that Blood & Chrome will refocus the Battlestar Galactica franchise to mindless fight scenes. Seeing as Syfy has tossed Caprica and Stargate Universe aside to make way for WWE Smackdown and reality programming, the cause for concern is justified. Syfy Original Movies like Mega Python vs. Gataroid equally threaten the intellectual integrity of the channel.

It only takes a glance over the concept art featuring Blood & Chrome’s “cython” to raise alarm that the Battlestar franchise is being retooled to fit the Syfy channel’s “new, broader” audience.

The artwork also features concepts for cylons that don’t resemble a natural progression from the cylons of Caprica to those of Battlestar Galactica.

Raising further concerns, Nico Cortez, who played Bill Adama in Battlestar’s Razor, was not cast to play Adama in Blood & Chrome. Instead this fan favorite was replaced with Luke Pasqualino, an actor from the British teen sitcom, Skins.

Some fans of Caprica that were also fans of Stargate Universe are finding themselves in a familiar, frustrating territory. Many attribute the negativity from fans of Stargate Atlantis towards SGU as one of the reasons SGU was not renewed. Having recently gone through this storm of disdain they don’t want to see the same happen to Blood & Chrome in fears that the franchise will be killed.

But Caprica fans have been through this themselves. Since the announcement of Caprica, Battlestar Galactica fans have vowed that they would not watch Caprica as it would not compare to BSG. Some swore off the franchise alltogether as a result of the ending to BSG. For angry Caprica fans, boycotting Blood & Chrome is their opportunity to get back at the Battlestar fans who spitefully scorned Caprica.

This has all happened before, but does it have to happen again?

From my personal perspective, I don’t want to support Blood & Chrome. I liked Caprica and I’m disinterested in seeing BSG take a new direction focused on violence and simple storylines. But as a fan of Caprica, I have to support Blood & Chrome and I encourage all Caprica fans to support it with me.

The success of continuing Caprica in the future hinges on Blood & Chrome doing well and the BSG franchise continuing. If Battlestar Galactica is seen as a dead end due to Blood & Chrome failing it will be highly unlikely that a producer will support funding for a Caprica related tv show or movie.

I also remind myself, if Caprica had never aired, I would unquestionably have at least a slight interest in Blood & Chrome. After all, many of the same crew from writers to production for Blood & Chrome come from Battlestar Galactica and Caprica. They deserve us to at least give it a shot. If everything works out in our favor, Blood & Chrome will continue to series and Universal Cable Productions may take interest in Caprica again. After all it only makes sense to share crews and production costs such as green screens between series. If Blood & Chrome happens to fail it will only be further evidence that Syfy cannot sustain a Science Fiction franchise and I hope that future producers of Science Fiction will look elsewhere for support.

In the meantime as we wait for news of the future of Caprica, we have reached over 7,100 signers on the Caprica petition. Beginning of Line continues the stories of Caprica into a second season of fan fiction.  They are currently looking for someone to make a video for the Beginning of Line theme song. The Colony of Caprica aims to immerse fans in a role-playing forum taking on the life of the twelve colonies.

I won’t go into my many criticisms of “Caprica” and I understand your pain.

All I ask is that you look at the writer of each episode and judge. I’m guessing you got into “Caprica” because of “Battlestar Galactica”, so take a look at the writers of your favorite episodes, keeping in mind that Ron Moore did rewrites less and less as BSG went on, stopping rewriting completely in Season 4.

Ron Moore wrote the “Caprica” pilot, but then left the show in terms of managing the writers’ room and, most importantly, rewriting.

The best episodes of “Caprica” were by Michael Taylor: “Ghosts in the Machine” and “False Labor”. He has written “Blood and Chrome”. He also wrote tremendous BSG episodes: “Unfinished Business”, “Takin’ a Break From All Your Worries”, “Crossroads 1″, “The Ties That Bind”, “Sine Qua Non”.

It won’t just be action; action is the backdrop, but drama is the focus, just as it was on BSG. He’s said that the conceptual art — like that ridiculous snake — were just ideas by visual artists about how things might look and don’t reflect the script.

Please give it a chance. It will be great drama and he will be a great show runner, which, as Caprica’s cast will tell you, was lacking on “Caprica”.

The only reason I contemplate not supporting Blood and Chrome is simply out of spite for Syfy. However, not only do I lack confidence that the message would bleed through to them, but it would mainly only hurt the cast and staff working directly on the show.

The only thing I resent is that they didn’t bring on Nico Cortez to reprise the Adama role. He was frakking perfect. He better be very impressive or they should have a good godsdamn reason to justify this casting decision.

Although I believe Blood and Chrome will be successful, I believe it will be due to the same reason why I fear it will also be lacking the potency of its two predecessors. BSG worked because of the military action, as well as all the spirituality intertwined (and so much more) No doubt, Blood and Chrome will have ample amounts of action (especially as its set during a higher tide of war than BSG), but I have heard nothing to believe that they will bring on the God part of the equation – especially since 1) this was originally envisioned just as a web series and 2) this theism was a much bitched about flaw of both series. The question remains whether they will touch upon that or leave what they may feel is well enough alone.

On a brighter note, a breakdown of the pilot does reveal a Graystone employee as an integral character to the story (of at least the pilot), so it seems a tad bit of comfort to see a bit of bridging of the two shows. I have to wonder if we’ll see any of the Caprica characters outside of Bill Adama.

    Friends,
I have an idea. Let us change the fighting strategy and not focus anymore on SyFy, but on THEIR SOPONSORS!!!

Let them know that Caprica`s fans will manifest against their enterprises, against the products they are selling, since they make no pressure on the Channel to abort their decision to stop Caprica!
Maybe will work better than petitions and apples!
    Lords of Kobol, help us!

I don’t believe in doing anything out of spite. Spite doesn’t make a network feel anything, and it won’t matter to them if someone doesn’t watch “Blood and Chrome” or not out of spite. Not enough viewers? They’ll cancel it, just like they’d cancel any other show. That’s how it works. The best things to do with franchises you love is talk them UP, not talk them down. “Vote with your dollars” so to speak. Supporting businesses you like with your patronage works a lot better than boycotting the ones you don’t, unless you’re SURE you’ve got a LOT of people behind you, and there just aren’t enough people in this case. I’ll be watching Blood & Chrome, because I love the BSG universe, and I’m curious as to the direction in which this will go. Do I think it’s an unnecessary part of the story, as I don’t really need to see Young William Adama as a fighter pilot? Yes. But I’ll at least watch the first couple of episodes to see if it’s interesting after all.

As for the actor cast as Adama, he actually makes sense for two reasons. 1) this story is about Adama as a young fighter pilot. Nico Cortez is already too old for the age range they want to portray. Remember, this is set at the beginning of the cylon war. Cortez played Adama on the last day of the cylon war. 2) In “The Shape of Things to Come” on Caprica, the “new” Bill Adama was dark-skinned, as is Edward James Olmos. Pasqualino is a good middle ground between the two.

Lastly, I’m not worried about this show not having “enough story.” The BSG franchise is great about story. The question is, is it a story we’ll care about. I ended up loving Caprica a little more than BSG, because I’m personally more interested in how technology affects regular people rather than the military. But that’s a personal preference. It doesn’t make BSG any less brilliant or character-driven, and it doesn’t mean that Blood & Chrome won’t have anything to offer.

Blood and Chrome, has so many continuity issues, it is actually pathedic, and David Eick, Syfy, and others involved are actually counting on people simply wanting something with an action and war premise, attached to the BSG franchise, as well as people that have no real knowledge into these issues, to make this show a success.

The whole series will undermine everything BSG has brought before it, by changing everything from premise, style and concept. This will eventually take precedence to these new viewers as to what BSG was all about, to begin with and only use the Blood and Chrome, now set premise as what BSG was about.

When was the last time you actually watched any of the BSG episodes and and thought WOW this reminds me of Star Trek? If you don’t lie to yourself, the answer would be never. BSG and Star Trek are two completely different type shows. They both are good in their own rights, but still completely different premises. Bringing these two together may make a good type of show, but not for a true BSG franchise and still hold what made BSG what it is and was.

If people actually used all that energy of they have to actually see just how much Blood and Chrome is changing everything that BSG was actually about and the type of show it actually was, instead of simply trying to show why it should be a valid series to the BSG franchise, you would actually see so many continuity issues. Reading some of the many people’s confusion on some of the past issues with Caprica/BSG alone, I can hardly wait to see how they do with the content that Blood and Chrome will be throwing in the mix (that is if they actually real care about maintaining any actual ties to the BSG series itself or simply just want another show to watch).

Blood and Chrome is suppose to be a prequel to BSG, the main idea behind prequels are to show un-answered questions of the past of the original. What exactly will Blood and Chrome be answering? Especially starting 10 years into this war, only leaving 2 years remaining. The only reason they are making this is to have Adama fighting in a war, that is it, plain and simple. They are not making a show to answer questions about the original or show any history or background, they could care less and depending on people that know nothing about either BSG or Caprica to make the series work.

Simply put, they cannot call this a prequel, a new version, maybe, but definitely not a prequel and should be treated as such (and re-promoted in this manner). They are simply only using names and other similarities of both BSG and Caprica, to set up for some minor story sets, nothing more. Anyone who believes all the hype and all the different creatures/cylon changes etc. that will be involved in this new series (basically to make the show more compelling to those not familiar with the original), really never followed BSG or understood what it was about, and only liked certain aspects of it, not appreciating the whole aspect of the series.

Feel free to enjoy the new version, that is your right, but don’t for one minute, believe that it reflects anything that BSG was ever about or stood for. There may be more behind Blood and Chrome’s new style, premise and change of direction as well as why Ron Moore isn’t involved, than has been released? Think about that, while your at it, after all Ron Moore, made BSG:Re-Imaged, what it was and what it stood for.

I know Wikipedia is a source that anyone can can add to, making it not a reliable source, but you can even see that whoever has done this, is already separated Caprica from BSG:Re-Imaged, in the same way that the original (TOS) version has been. While doing so, also places Blood and Chrome, right in the middle of the Re-Imaged version, essentially already trying to establish the two as the same in style, premise and direction. Out of the two, Blood & Chrome and Caprica, Caprica holds true to what the essence of BSG:Re-Imaged series was about in style, premise and story style. By having B&C coming off as action/war type series, as well as ‘stand-alone episodes’ etc., is falsely portraying what BSG:Re-Imaged was ever about. So all these new people joining the franchise to watch this new version of BSG (which should be classified, as just that *new version*, not part of), are simply going to buy into all this only action and war type show, and believe that this is all the original was about (since this is an actual prequel of it). Not sure if anyone from the network/Syfy etc. are behind this kind of separation and classification of these different series type, but it is just the start of separating the true reality of what BSG:Re-Imaged was really about. This chart is on both the Battlestar Galactica & Battlestar Galactica:Blood and Chrome websites of Wiki. Notice ‘Caprica’ is not included in the list of BSG:Re-Imaged Movies? They are treating it totally separate from the series.

Some of the same people may be working on this project but (Ron Moore made BSG and Caprica what they were), not with the same outlook and Eick (is simply trying to do what Ron Moore did when he created BSG:Re-Imaged, in hopes that it will have the same results BSG:Re-Imaged had when it was first released), as well as the rest are taking BSG:Re-Imaged as a basis to make another completely different type of show as BSG:Re-Imaged did for BSG(TOS). They are using the same basic premise behind their thinking, in that well change really worked well when we introduced BSG:Re-Imaged, so let’s do this again and change the story type, concept and style.

Clint’s read Battlestar Galactica : Blood and Chrome

by “Caffeinated” Clint (Sunday, January 30th, 2011 at 12:44 pm)

“…Adama’s been assigned to the Galactica, a broken-down old vessel run by the equally as weary Silas Nash. His first mission? Fly a ‘Raptor’ – yes, a frakkin’ ‘Raptor’ – into battle. The mission? prevent some things from going BOOM! (Cylons have peppered the rocks with explosives)…”

Notice that in this description, they have Adama’s first ‘flying in combat mission’ as in a Rapter….lol (His first mission? Fly a ‘Raptor’ – yes, a frakkin’ ‘Raptor’ – into battle.). His first military combat mission was in a Viper (we won’t even go into this happening on the last day of the war). His first cylon kill was shooting down a Raider, from a Viper and finishing off the kill, on the surface of the planet. I’m am very confident they will stick to continuity (smirks), especially if they can break continuity on his very first mission.

What Caprica Was Initially Intended To Be About And Why Blood And Chrome Was Created

When Syfy initially created Caprica’s pilot movie, with the intent on making it into an ongoing series, Syfy had certain expectations that would happen as the show progressed. One thing that they based some information on was a time line for William Adama. This time line stated that William Adama would be 16 at the start of the First Cylon War. This information is actually contained in the BSG Bible, which was even used to create BSG: Re-Imaged Series. This was basically a sort of guideline to help the writers, by giving them somewhat of a guide to use for the series. Not all of this information was followed to the ‘T’, but was a general guideline to keep them somewhat on track.

When they started to create Caprica, they also pulled out this BSG Bible. The age of William Adama was initially established by this, as was the direction upon which Caprica would eventually lead into. Below is the actual time line and information pertaining to it, that Syfy initially used, concerning Adama and his age, when creating Caprica:

    ” William Adama
William Adama was born on the colony of Caprica, in a small coastal community. His mother Evelyn was an accountant and his father, Joseph, was an attorney who specialised in criminal defence and civil liberties. At the age of 16 his parents divorced and he applied to the Colonial Fleet Academy. That same year, the Cylon War broke out. Adama’s training accelerated along with all other midshipmen. After 3 years Adama was commissioned to work as a flight pilot; he gained a further two years of training before Adama joined his first squadron. He was a gifted, natural pilot and he shot down a Cylon fighter in his first mission.”

This is the reason, Syfy initially must have thought that Caprica would be a good prequel to do for BSG, as well a the following reasons.

    1) It could give background into the creation of the cylons. Also I just recently noticed, at the opening scenes, in the movie ‘The Plan’ the Hybrid actually states and tells about Apotheosis as being before the beginning of all things (just a quick thought I had concerning this, religious viewpoint, upon which I thought they just made it up to bring something into the religious aspect in Caprica, not that it was actually talked about or referred to in BSG…lol. I guess it was.) Just a quick thought I noticed and wanted to throw it in. Who knows if this was also brought up in some of the other Hybrid’s rantings in the actual series. They talked so fast at times you couldn’t really understand everything they said, anyways…lol.

    2) Once this was done, apparently they had planned to advance to just before the first cylon war, from the onset of the show (to show this aspect as well), which would lead into showing the battles etc. in this war.

    3) They also must have originally thought that Adama would be fighting in this war from the beginning (or there sometime soon), being that they originally used his age time line of that being 16 years old at the start of the first cylon war. They most likely didn’t discover that this age would effect him being almost 70 for the start of BSG, until sometime after the pilot was made and started making the actual episodes. Essentially, this would make Adama 28 at the end of the First Cylon War and adding another 40 years, would make him at minimum 68, to start off the BSG series. At this point is most likely when they noticed the show wouldn’t be able to show what they were originally leading into to have the show be about.

So they naturally had to fix this time line error, since the pilot had already been shown, and at least play out the rest of the season’s episodes, especially since they were really quick about making them, I mean they were all shot by the end of February 2010 and only needed the CGI added to them.

Now they needed a way out to bring forth a show that would really show what Caprica was intended to be about, Adama fighting in the first cylon war. Dubbed Blood and Chrome. They just needed a way to bring this about, so they figured they would start with webisodes, hence the initial greenlight to do this. Also they had already started Caprica, but then saw the pre-production of Blood and Chrome and finally decided they would bring it to TV, instead, which was their original intent with Caprica.

This would be why everything was, in essence trying to be brushed under the rug with Caprica, and the quick change and all aspects that were done to get rid of it. I know there are going to be some that will keep bringing up…BUT THE RATINGS!!!!!. That’s a crock and the second half was set up to fail, the first half was people not realizing the direction of Caprica and where it was heading, and only seeing a soap opera/ Dallas type show (because that is what Syfy promoted it to be), so the Rating issues will not fly with me, no matter how many times and how many people want to throw this issue out…lol. If everything was going to go the way Syfy thought and Adama would be fighting in the beginning of the first cylon war, they would definitely have done a better job with maintaining and holding out on the series until this aspect came about, and not canceled the show.

My point is, I can see a better picture as to why Syfy may have wanted to get rid of Caprica and go with Blood and Chrome, since essentially Blood and Chrome is where they were initially intending to go with Caprica, believing that Adama would be 16 at the start of the first cylon war. After all character recognition is the best aspect a show can have to make it work. So they wanted to bring forth a show that would allow Adama to be fighting in the first cylon war, no matter how or what they needed to do to make it happen.

Caprica was initially intended to lead into having William Adama fighting in the First Cylon War. When that got bungled by his age scenario. That’s when Blood and Chrome came about, in an attempt to do the same thing, have Adama fighting in the first war…lol.

I just like to know reasons behind methods upon which a decent show is canceled just to bring about another show that would show the same thing (the first cylon war), upon which the one canceled was already heading to do, on top of give us more history and background along the way.

Knowing what their whole original plan was, makes it easier to understand, that they were not simply just trying to show us background and history, but basically lead into Adama fighting in this war, one way or another. The main and only aspect they wanted was Adama fighting in the war, everything else was circumstantial. Plain and simple
