The story told in the Caprica pilot occurs 58 years before the fall of Caprica. Everyday life in Caprica City is easy for us to relate to. People commute by vehicles recognizable to us, cell phones are commonly used in public places and daily routines like going to school or work are followed by society. What makes Caprica interesting is the intricate differences from what we’re used to. Religion is practiced in school, Taurons are openly discriminated against, and technology has enhanced society to an ominously comfortable and questionable new brink.

Caprica revolves around the life of a teenaged girl, Zoe Graystone. Like any young girl she rebells against her parents and searches for an identity. Helping her figure this out are her close friends, Ben Stark and Lacy Rand as well as their religious counselor at school, Clarice Willow. We are introduced to her at a point where who she is becomes not only vital to her own life but indirectly to the entire city of Caprica.

This is partly due to the influence of her father, Daniel Graystone, who runs Graystone Industries – a leader in artificial intelligence and robot designs. His company allows Zoe, his wife Amanda, and him to live a lavish life in a luxurious waterside mansion, though you get the feeling he hardly gets to enjoy it due to being immersed in is work. As all families do, the Graystones particularly have their share of grievances with each other due to the circumstances of their fortune.

Through a tragedy, Daniel will have a chance meeting with Joseph Adams. This is ironic with Daniel being somewhat of a celebrity and Joseph being a lowly Tauron. The bond they share intricately pulls these two men who otherwise would never have met together to help each other. They wind up developing something Caprica has never before seen.

Where Caprica soars, like Battlestar Galactica, is in the characters and the conflicts they go through. Very quickly as viewers we are asked simple questions about what we value in life. Easily we put ourselves in a fight similar to the one the Graystone’s have in the opening scenes (personal jabs, screaming) and further along this makes the questions Caprica asks of us much more relevant to consider.

While the pacing is similar to some of the quieter episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica’s action scenes are nothing to scoff at. The CGI throughout the entire pilot is beautifully done but these scenes in particular are eye grabbing. Though there may be less of them, don’t expect the guns and explosions of BSG to disappear in Caprica.

The religious aspect of Battlestar Galactica widens deeper with Caprica. Besides Zoe and her friend’s meetings with Clarice, we find that not only are there various religious beliefs on Caprica, but that other planets practice differently. The pilot digs just deep enough into each sect to keep us intrigued about what drives Caprican society. There have been no signs of divine intervention, so all of you that were unsatisfied with the Battlestar finale can breathe a sigh of relief for now.

The musical score presses the somber seriousness of what’s unfolding before us. Bear McCreary once again squeezes a landscape of emotion through the repetition of an eerily familiar tribe of notes. It’s as if the entire pilot rests on a quilt of sound woven carefully to embrace it.

What’s beautiful about the story being told in Caprica is that although we know where this is all going, we’re finding out why it’s headed that way and the steps that took us to that place. Through the story of a compelling group of people just trying to cope with life we’ll be facing difficult questions about technology and morality that we may have to ask ourselves within the next few centuries. It’s as if we are getting the chance to see the potential for our own Earthly future and take it for a test drive. The question remains – which decisions reward us and which could be our demise?

The Caprica Pilot has leaked online via torrent. This is the 2 hour movie set to be released on DVD on April 21 in the US.
