Leah Gibson

Photographer: Karolina Turek
Make-Up/Hair: Brei Zellinsky
Stylist: Karolina Jez

Leah Gibson grew up in Victoria, Vancouver. She’s made appearances on TV in Psych, Tin Man and Supernatural and on film in The Cycle and Watchmen. Her current projects include playing Nettie in the upcoming film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, as well as a role in the indie film, Indie Jonesing. Leah currently has a recurring role as Emmanuelle on Caprica. For more information see her facebook page and twitter account.

The Caprica Times: What was it like to play an avatar?

Leah Gibson: It was so much fun!  It was liberating, and mysterious, and empowering, and incredibly exciting.  Liberating in the sense that Emmanuelle is not confined to the normalcies of regular human behaviour, and her motivations at first seemed to be driven by a need to assert herself as the dominant force.  I felt as though she was ‘in it for the thrill’, and thrived on playing her power, but I could also sense from the beginning that her protective nature for Joseph was somehow rooted in genuine affection. So it was incredibly exciting in that sense- experiencing her thrill for the game, but feeling instinctively inspired to protect Joseph at the same time.  I experienced her as a sort of predatory black widow—hungry and feisty and sexually charged.  I knew that whoever she belonged to in the real world had selected her as an extrapolation of dominance that he or she hungered for in reality.  But I could also sense that this person cared for Joseph very much.  The secret of Emmanuelle’s real identity was such a delightful mystery, but those two qualities were very evident to me.

The Caprica Times: Did you find it strange at first not knowing who you were in the real world?

Leah Gibson: I loved not knowing.  I felt confident that I understood her intentions and I knew that her stance in V-world was likely very much a departure from who she vesseled in the real world, so I enjoyed playing her strength and lucidity in the V-world without questioning the nature of her inhabitant’s real essence.  I will be honest though, at one point there were rumours flying around set for a few weeks that she might be the avatar for Sam Adama.  And I will never forget, one morning Esai and I were in the transport van on our way to set and he turned to me and said, “You know, it might be a good idea for you to start taking notes on Sasha’s performances as Sam, so that you can start playing some of his ideosyncracies in Emmanuelle.”  That didn’t instinctively sit with me though… and thank heavens I didn’t take his advice, because Emmanuelle might have read a little ambiguously!

The Caprica Times: Once you did find out that you would be revealed as Evelyn, did it change the way you portrayed Emmanuelle?

Leah Gibson: The final discovery made so much sense to me.  That she had always cared for Joseph and felt a need to protect him was clear to me from the beginning.  Following my discovery of her real identity, it suddenly became quite clear that Emmanuelle’s meetings with Tamara revolved around her intentions to connect with her, and were charged with the need to reach out and offer a sort of maternal guidance.  Evelyn’s affections for Joseph in the real world were channeled into Emmanuelle’s empowered stance and instinctive role as his female guide in the V-world, but the integrity of her essence conflagrated when she sat down with his daughter and faced the young girl who she implicitly cared for with such affection.

The Caprica Times: Is it difficult to “share” the role of a character with someone else?

Leah Gibson: It’s very interesting. All of us as individuals have different sides to our Selves—public and private persona, the Selves we are proud to share with the world and would like to exhibit at the best of times, and inversely, the Selves we keep hidden from the public eye.  I believe V-world is an enticing escape for Caprican citizens because it offers the freedom to indulge in behaviours that may be contrary to the Selves that are most socially acceptable.  In that sense, “sharing” this character is very interesting.  Emmanuelle may be the personification of Evelyn’s private persona— both Selves are rooted in the same person, yet Emmanuelle extravertedly embodies the inversely projected characteristics. Her intentions with protecting Joseph are the dominant driving force between the two Selves- the common ground underlying both Evelyn and Emmanuelle- as is revealed in Emmanuelle’s maternal connections with Tamara.

The Caprica Times: The reveal of Evelyn made her seem like a villian. Do you think that her actions as Emanuelle were devious?

Leah Gibson: I don’t.  Though she exudes a femme-fatale charisma in the V-world, I think it’s clear that Emmanuelle is fueled with the best intentions in protecting Joseph.  The fact that she wanted to hide her true identity from him is evidence that she wanted him to make discoveries in the V-world for himself, and find closure over Tamara’s death on his own ground.  That speaks powerfully about her affections for him.

The Caprica Times: Were you comfortable with all of the violence surrounding your character and Joseph?

Leah Gibson: To be perfectly honest, I would have had a more difficult time with the violence had the scenes been reality-based.  Knowing the violence was taking place in the V-world, and – strangely – knowing that Emmanuelle knew she wasn’t really ending a person’s life but merely ending their play in the game made me more comfortable with the violence.  To understand a character’s intentions as an actor, I feel it is essential to receive and accept different perspectives without imposing judgment on them.  I found it much easier opening to Emmanuelle’s and Evelyn’s justifications of violence in knowing that SHE understood it was exclusive to a false reality.

The Caprica Times: In the podcast for End of Line you recieved great accolades from David Eike, an executive producer of Caprica. He mentioned that your role in the second half of the season is very important. Is there anything you can elaborate on regarding that?

Leah Gibson: Oh my goodness, bless his heart.  Thank you Mr. Eike! What an honor. There’s not much I can reveal… except that Evelyn/Emmanuelle’s intentions become much more clarified and firmly rooted as the story progresses… I love the movement forward.

The Caprica Times: What was it like to boss around Esai Morales who plays Joseph Adama?

Leah Gibson: Well that was the best part of playing Emmanuelle! That, and the boots of course.  (giggles)  Esai and I hit it off right away, from the first day we met on set—we have always had a really wonderful rapport with one another.  He was kind and incredibly warm, and so very much fun to play around with.  And there is nothing more satisfying than playing the role of a strong, empowered female, who gets to kick the butts of minion men!  Esai was full of advice and opinions until the camera started rolling, and then it was me kicking him into gear!

The Caprica Times: Was it hard to visualize the atmosphere of V-World while acting?

Leah Gibson: It was fun.  It was like playing pretend to the max.  Not every acting role grants that sort of freedom.  We would be doing a take and director Wayne Rose would yell, “Ok, now there’s a great dirigible looming over you, and it’s going to shoot—duck!” And we would duck for cover, and imagine it passing, and feel so relieved.. And the set decs on the show were so amazing, that the dark and gritty surroundings of our set felt completely daunting and dirty and perfectly believable.  It was like stepping into a different realm altogether.

The Caprica Times: In a world that looks so urban and dirty how did you keep looking so sharp?

Leah Gibson: How kind of you!  For that I have the amazing hair and makeup team to thank—Emmy Award winning Rebecca Lee is truly incredible at what she does.  I would step into the makeup trailer early in the morning as a sleepy looking Leah, and as soon as Rebecca put my lashes in place and lined my red lips, I would look up at her and she would say, “There she is!  There’s Emmanuelle!”

The Caprica Times: Were there any special moments you shared on set?

Leah Gibson: We were filming on Esai’s birthday , and he was completely spoiled. I baked him a pie, and Alessandra came to set with a great big birthday cake, and we all sang happy birthday to him and dug into this massive cake in between takes. Everyone went out that night singing karaoke, and showed up the next morning with hoarse voices!  Cast parties were so much fun too.  We all love to dance, so the dance parties last for hours!

The Caprica Times: Would you like to say anything to the fans of Caprica?

Leah Gibson: Yes- thank you for your love and support! And we’re just getting started with our story, so get ready for what’s on the way… xxo

The Caprica Times Exclusive Interview: Richard Harmon

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Richard Harmon (Tad/Hercales in Caprica)

Richard Harmon is from Vancouver, Canada. He has  appeared in TV shows such as To Be Fat Like Me, Painkiller Jane and Fringe and movies including Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. He recently played Heracles/Tad in Syfy’s Caprica.

The Caprica Times: When did you and Genevieve Buechner (the actress who plays Tamara Adama) become an item?
Richard Harmon: Haha, well our first date was about a week after filming the episode (There is Another Sky) and she has been one of the most important things in my life since. I love her unconditionally and I can thank Caprica for that.
The Caprica Times: Was there a romantic connection between Tamara Adama and Heracles?
Richard Harmon: Yes, from my perspective there is a little bit of a romantic connection between Tamara and Heracles, especially from Heracles’ point of view. No one ever believed in him in his actual life but Tamara shows that she actually has confidence in his ability to succeed in the real world - something no one else has done for him. Heracles was just using Tamara in the beginning to get what he thought he wanted but in the end he definitely felt a romantic connection towards her.
The Caprica Times: What did you find most intriguing about the New Cap City game?
Richard Harmon: The most intriguing thing about the game to me would probably be simply it’s realistic qualities - it’s life with no regrets… unless you get shot by fighter jets, you may regret that.
The Caprica Times: Was it weird for you when you read that your character would assume the identity of other people in the game?
Richard Harmon: No, I wouldn’t say I found it weird. I definitely found it cool that AC Peterson, the actor that played Chiron, had to study the way I acted so it would seem like it was really me playing him.
The Caprica Times: What were your first thoughts when you read that the dirigible would kill Heracles in New Cap City?
Richard Harmon: Honestly, I was a little sad that I die - it’s generally not a good feeling when you read your character will die. But after I thought about it for awhile, I realized that’s a pretty darn good way to go out. Filming that scene was by far one of the most fun scenes I’ve ever had the priviledge to shoot in my career.
The Caprica Times: Are there similarities between you and Heracles that helped you when playing the role?
Richard Harmon: Oh absolutely. Heracles is pretty much me but with a little more swagger. The whole getting away from your real life to be whatever you want to be is completely understandable to me - I mean that’s a huge reason why I became an actor. Not that my real life is bad or anything, but when I’m acting I can be whatever I want to be which is an incredible feeling. So yes the similarites between Heracles and myself definitely helped in the process of becoming him.
The Caprica Times: Would you consider yourself a gamer in your normal life?
Richard Harmon: I definitely try to be. I love video games. Unfortunately I am not the greatest player in the world - I’m not even a good player, quite mediocre really. I own an Xbox 360 and a Wii. I pretend to be good at all the games by playing them all set on easy… I’m not proud.
The Caprica Times: What was the most memorable thing that happened while on set?

Richard Harmon: Hmm, most memorable thing to happen on set.. There is just too much stuff to choose from! I definitely enjoyed all the explosions that we got to do between the two episodes. I had never really done anything as physical as caprica before - it was incredible! I could go on forever about how amazing everyone who works on Caprica is. It was absolutely one of the friendliest sets I have ever had the great pleasure of working on! No matter how hectic everything got everyone somehow was able to rally together and keep smiles on their faces which kept a smile on mine. Working with such amazing Directors like Michael Nankin and Wayne Rose made working on this very intimidating show an ease. They always made me feel like I was where I belonged and at the end of the day that made that made my stay on this show incredibly memorable.

If I really had to choose one thing that’s the most memorable about working on this show to me I would definitely 100% say it was meeting Genevieve and getting to know her. Haha, I remember that the producers set up a meeting between the two of us before we started filming just to let us become comfortable with one another and build up a chemistry so to speak. When I had finished meeting her I went and hung out with a friend and I remember he asked me if there was any sort of real chemistry between us and I just laughed and said, “I could never get her…” Haha, little did I know. I want to thank Caprica for forcing her to be stuck beside me for hours and hours every day on set - that way we got to know each other better and I gained one of the most important people in my life. Long story short - I owe alot to Caprica!
The Caprica Times: Would you like to say anything to the fans of Caprica?
Richard Harmon: Oh absolutely! I want to thank the fans of Caprica for obviously watching the show and definitely for making me feel proud after all of the really kind words that they have given me. Also, thank you to a few of the fans who recognized me in public even when my hair isn’t slicked back and I’m in just jeans and a shirt not a suit. It made me feel very special because I never thought that would happen in a million years! Mostly thank you for making all of this stuff a reality for me - if fans weren’t there then there wouldn’t be a Caprica and without Caprica my life would be missing a lot of important parts. So for that I thank you so much!

Although he will not be appearing in tonight’s episode, End of Line, The Caprica Times hope to see Richard return as Tad in the second half of Season 1 of Caprica!

Paley Center: The Coming Episodes

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The Caprica Times joined the crowd at yesterday’s Paley Center Caprica event. Those who attended were treated to the next two episodes of Caprica, Ghosts in the Machine and End of Line. We were asked not to give away anything that happens, however in the spirit of a good tease I’d like to share some cryptic clues with you (Double quotes are from the episodes, single are from outside unrelated sources):

  • The tension heats up between Daniel and his robot daughter.
  • This isn’t the last we’ve seen of Caesar (the Graystone’s dog).
  • “How do you kill someone?”
  • “It doesn’t bother you that you don’t know what she looks like?”
  • “I’m going on a vacation.”
  • “The key’s the key.”
  • A meeting in the rain.
  • Black heels.
  • ‘When darkness comes, and pain is all around…’

And The Caprica Times’  opinion of a summary for the first half of season 1:

  • ‘Was love the reason that everything fell apart? Or were you and I the ones to blame?’

Exclusive Interview: Genevieve Buechner (Tamara Adama)

Friday, March 5th, 2010
Genevieve Buechner

Genevieve Buechner (her friends call her Genna) was born in Edmonton, Alberta, to single parent mother Tea Buechner. When her family moved to Vancouver, she took a small course in acting from the Vancouver Youth Theatre and went on tour with the youth theater as the youngest member of the cast. After being signed to and signed to Carrier Talent Management by Robert Carrier she went on to do TV and movies and was nominated for two Leo Awards for her performances in Saint Monica and Princess Castle. She is currently playing Tamara Adama on Syfy’s hit television series, Caprica which airs Friday nights at 9pm EST/8pm CST.

The Caprica Times: Have you seen Battlestar Galactica?

Genevieve Buechner: I have, but not the whole series. I haven’t finished watching it all yet. I have it on DVD. As strange at this might sound coming from someone who works in the film industry, I don’t watch TV. I don’t have any cable – only DVDs – but believe me, I have enough DVDs for a lifetime. Huge collection.

The Caprica Times: You play an important role as William Adama’s sister. Does that factor into how you view Tamara?

Genevieve Buechner: Well they both have very separate stories really. Before Tamara was killed she was probably just a regular big sister – you know, a bit of teasing, a bit of, ”I’m older than you so I can do this, and you cant!,” probably some nice heart to hearts, and she would stand up to anyone who would hurt him, no doubt. But Tamara’s story is about how shes stuck. She’s trying to find a way out. William’s story is more about him learning who he really is – learning that his nameis really Adama, not Adams. He’s connecting with other parts of his family while his father is mourning over Tamara and his wife.

The Caprica Times: How do you relate to your character?

Genevieve Buechner:  She is actually very strong-willed. In the pilot you hear her telling her mother about how she stands up for her race. She was being made fun of, being called a dirt-eater, and she didn’t stand for it. When I was little I was bullied in school pretty badly and as I got older I realized that I had the right to stand up for myself, for who I am. We are similar in that way.

The Caprica Times: We don’t know much about Tamara’s past from the little we’ve seen of her. How has that affected how you portray her?

Genevieve Buechner: I think she probably had a good life aside from being a bit of an outcast in Caprica. Her family loved her and took care of her. She was brought up well and was taught to take care of herself if anything should happen. I think when she’s killed and recreated in the black room she has no idea of whats going on. But once she starts to learn how things work where she is she starts to take control again and remembers what she has been taught.

The Caprica Times: When you first read a script about New Cap City what were your thoughts about it?

Genevieve Buechner: My very first thought was for sure, “Oh my gosh, look at all the crazy stuff I get to do!” Guns, green-screens, squibs, stunts -all stuff I’d never done before. It was a totally new experience for me. New Cap City is very dark, creepy and gritty. It’s all control and violence. I loved the way they decided to dim the colours in New Cap so it’s all faded and almost black and white.

The Caprica Times: Without giving anything away are there any twists to your character that will surprise us?

Genevieve Buechner: Already from the first episode where Zoe and Lacy find Tamara to the end of the New Cap City episode there’s a pretty drastic change in her character. From a confused kid to a huge bad-ass! I was really happy that they chose to let Tamara have such a change. It was fun for me to make that switch.

The Caprica Times: I read in an interview that you would rather play villainous characters over innocent and sweet ones. Do you feel that Tamara has a bad side to her?

Genevieve Buechner:  There’s no story without them! Everyone remembers their crazy ways and sneaky plans. I love playing both. I love acting so I’d take either in a second but the villains are so much fun to play! It’s fun to be something so evil and dark! It’s different. I think it’s a bit more of a challenge to play that kind of character. Every villain has some kind of weird little characteristic or habit and I think it’s fun to try and find what it would be. Nobody really hates the bad guys, everybody loves them, you cant lie.

The Caprica Times: Were you surprised when they called you back to make Tamara a recurring character?

Genevieve Buechner: Oh I was bouncing off the walls I was so excited. I was giddy for days – I really was! I couldn’t wait to start filming. I was excited to get the scripts and learn what I’d be doing and where  they were taking the character. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. I still cant believe how lucky I am! This show is a big deal for me. It’s something I’ve really been working for for a very long time and I’m so happy that I’ve been able to come this far in the show. I had no idea I was being brought back. I didn’t expect it at all. I had thought about maybe being brought back after the pilot but I decided not to get my hopes up. I’m really glad they’ve kept me so far.

The Caprica Times: What do you like most about working on the set of Caprica?

Genevieve Buechner: I don’t have a favorite thing! I love it all! I love the people I get to work with, all the crew, the sets, everything! I always have a wonderful time on set. Everyone is working together. Almost nothing makes me happier then being on a film set – getting to know new people, seeing people you’ve worked with before, making memories of it all. Being on set is one of the most uplifting things in my life. I love it with all my heart. Acting is something I want to do for the rest of my life.

The Caprica Times: Are there any stories from the set that stand out?

Genevieve Buechner: Well, there’s the endless stories of me falling on my butt. I’m a huge klutz sometimes. I tiptoe when I walk so I’m actually less of a stumbler if I’m in heels and lucky for me most of my wardrobe involved heels. But now and then I’d somehow end up falling on my butt and looking like a goof. But it’s funny and I never got hurt.

Better story – I met my boyfriend on Caprica. Richard Harmon!! I love him to bits. He’s the sweetest guy in the world and he always makes me so happy. He can make me smile no matter what. He’s an amazing actor and I had a great time working with him on set before we were together.

The Caprica Times: Is there anything you’d like to share with fans of the show?

Genevieve Buechner: Well I’d like to thank all the fans of Caprica! Support for any show is obviously important! I’m very happy that people seem to like Tamara, and I appreciate any kind of critiquing I’ve gotten -good or bad- it’s really helpful. I had the most fantastic time working on this show and will never forget it.

A future interview is planned with Genna’s on and off screen partner – Richard Harmon. Richard Harmon plays Heracles in the futuristic Caprica virtual game – New Cap City.

Daniel Graystone is the 7th Cylon

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Back after the Battlestar Galactica episode “No Exit” aired and it’s podcast was released, The Caprica Times asked, “Is Daniel Graystone the 7th Cylon?” The conclusion was that the mentioning of Daniel was a tease to make us infer that it might be the same Daniel that we know from the Caprica TV Series.

MHall of Galactica Science commented on that post, saying that Ron Moore (Executive Producer of both Battlestar Galactica and Caprica) had mentioned Daniel elsewhere in the podcast, stating, “And Daniel has significance in Caprica as well.” Relistening to the podcast, he does say this, beginning with Anders’ saying “Daniel” at 31:03 and ending at 31:12.

While there may still be another Daniel lurking the streets of Caprica the TV Series, The Caprica Times will conclude that Daniel Graystone is the seventh cylon model until he appears.
